VISUAL ARTS

Reed and Bel Aire
The Art program at Reed and Bel Aire schools is taught and run by Edy Raby who has been with the school district since 1986. She taught each of the grades at Bel Aire before becoming the art specialist at both Reed and Bel Aire Schools in 1999.

Edy believes that every child is already an artist when he or she arrives in the classroom. It is her job to help students explore their own ways of seeing the world and expressing themselves through visual mediums. It is great fun to watch each child’s skills, knowledge of art concepts, and personal confidence build as they move through the grades. Edy knows that early positive experiences in studio art and early exposure to great art of the world will leave children with an appreciation of art, whether created by themselves or by others.

Edy grew up in San Rafael, attended Terra Linda High School and graduated from U.C. Berkeley with a major in art and design. Following college, Edy worked in retail store management, window display design, museum exhibits design and for a time had her own business creating wearable art and art quilts. Edy returned to school and received her teaching credential from Sonoma State University in 1986. In her spare time she continues to draw, paint and work in metal.

Del Mar
The Art program at Del Mar is taught by Mr. Aaron Snyder. This program is structured around a Discipline Based Art Education. Each lesson contains elements of Art Studio, Art History, Art Criticism and Aesthetics. When taught together in the same curriculum, students walk away with the skills necessary to create art, the ability to understand the history behind art, and the ability to judge and talk about art wisely. Students become creative thinking individuals that are aware of the world around them.

Mr. Snyder was born in Columbus, Ohio and lived there until he moved to Cleveland to attend College. He graduated from Case Western Reserve University and the Cleveland Institute of Art with a both a BS and an MA in Art Education. Upon graduating from CWRU, he moved to California and began his career as a teacher and coach in Benicia and Brisbane. He has been with Del Mar since 2000 and teaches art to 6th, 7th and 8th graders.
