| Reed The goal of the Physical Education (PE) Program at Reed School is to provide a learning environment for each child to participate successfully in physical movement and to establish a foundation for learning the principles and importance of lifelong health and fitness. With new and continued research about the importance of daily physical exercise for growing children, the role of PE is as important as ever. A child's growth and development is based on developing good healthy habits in nutrition, fitness, promoting life-long skills and developing a positive attitude towards being active. The PE program at Reed is committed to helping students develop these good habits and to assisting teachers and parents reinforce this by being role models. The PE program is taught by Barbara Baird who has been teaching for 20 years and teaching Physical Education at Reed School for 16 years. She has a B.S. and an M.A. from George Washington University in Washington, DC. Barbara has two children, Bryan and Lauren, both avid athletes. Barbara loves tennis, skiing, hiking, kayaking and gardening. She is a seasoned traveler who has lived in the Middle East and in England. Once a week she volunteers, teaching English at the Canal Community Alliance in San Rafael. Barbara loves teaching children and seeing the expression in the kids’ eyes when they “get it” – when they realize that hard work and perseverance pay off. As Barbara says, “How many people get to go to a job where they can play with kids, run around, be outside and get lots of hugs everyday? I am very lucky, I love my job!!” No surprise to anyone who knows her, Barbara was the recipient of the Phoebe Hearst award in 2003. For more information go to the Reed PE Web Site. |
